What is healthy air?

The differences between World Health Organization (WHO) and European Union (EU) law

In Berlin, and Germany at large, it is the laws of the European Union (EU) around air quality that are binding.

The levels of accepted pollution are based on political negotiations in EU, meaning that the levels that are set by EU laws can be twice as high as the levels recommended for a healthy air quality by WHO.

The World Health Organization (WHO) provide recommendations for levels of pollution that are the least harmful to human beings.

In reality, there are no healthy levels of pollution.

In this project we take a look at Berlin’s air quality in relation to the WHO recommendations and the EU laws.

What are harmful pollutants in Berlin?

We have chosen to look at the 3 most harmful pollutants in Berlin. The European Environment Agency (EEA) has come to the conclusion that the 3 key pollutants affecting human health are NO2, PM2.5 and Ozone.

Below you can follow our research and see our findings about the pollutants and their levels in Berlin.
